Lost Filling or Crown: Temporary Fixes Before Your Appointment

  • A lost filling or crown can leave your tooth vulnerable to sensitivity, decay, and further damage.
  • Temporary dental materials may protect the area until you can see your dentist.
  • Pain, swelling, or worsening sensitivity are good reasons to call for care promptly.

A lost filling or crown can be uncomfortable, but taking a few careful steps can help protect your tooth before your appointment. At Dentistry at Ivy Falls, our team recommends treating temporary solutions as exactly that: temporary. The tooth still needs to be evaluated so we can determine why the restoration came loose and repair it properly.

What to Do After Losing a Filling or Crown

Start by gently rinsing your mouth with warm water and keeping the area clean. Avoid chewing hard, sticky, or crunchy foods on the affected side.

If you still have the crown, keep it somewhere clean and bring it to your appointment. Temporary dental cement or filling material sold for dental use may help cover the area until you can be seen. Follow the product instructions carefully.

For discomfort, use an appropriate over-the-counter pain reliever according to its label and your usual medical guidance.

Temporary Fixes to Avoid

Do not use household glue or attempt to create a permanent repair yourself. These materials can damage the tooth or make professional treatment more difficult. Also avoid forcing a crown back into position if it does not fit comfortably.

When to Call Your Dentist

Waiting too long can allow decay, fractures, or infection to develop. Contact our office promptly if you experience severe or persistent pain, swelling, significant sensitivity, or difficulty eating.

If your filling or crown has come loose, contact us so our team can evaluate the tooth and help protect your smile.
